Ribbon Valley is an abstraction of part of the Great Rift Valley in Ethiopia. It is the first of the ongoing Abstract Landscape series. After staring the photograph of the valley, I turned to the canvas, laid down a blue background, and spontaneously painted these shapes - hinting at the form of the landscape. They looked like ribbons in the wind, so I named it Ribbon Valley retrospectively.
